How many of us get to the point when we get what we want from God and in that moment, turn our back on God. In the moment of light, we neglect the work that went into getting us rebuilt in the dark. How many of us do that to God? How many of us turn away from His instruction or correction in the moment of our glory.

God tells us to fast and we continue making excuses, He tells us to get up and pray, and we say we are exhausted. We get the prayer answered and our hunger for Him dries up. In Hosea 6, God speaks to Ephraim about this very thing and compares his faithfulness to the fleeting nature of the morning mist. The scripture continues and God says that the only way to get Ephraim to wake up to God’s commands is through judgement. “For my judgement wakes you up like the blazing light of dawn” Hosea 6:6

I am reminded of how much we change on people who we have held onto when we were in the building, hidden phases of our lifes. As soon as the light comes, the small plant sprouts – we no longer want those people around because they remind us to not lose the hunger we had while building. They remind us not to lose sight of the work that went into getting to that moment. They remind us to continue going to church, to be mindful of certain behaviours, places or habits that could trip us. We want to relax we say, neglecting the danger of complacency. The Bible tells us to always be vigilant. We need to protect our seed; the vision God gave and hide the word of God in our heart.

That behaviour of losing sight does not only affect our human relationships but we tend to carry the same behaviour to our walk with God. Once we get the thing we want, we no longer have the same hunger for God, and we look away after He has opened His hand. We look for other gods to protect us, give us more or even guide us, neglecting that it was the hand of God that gave and poured. Idolatry is forgetting that God gave. It is moving your eye from God as the ultimate protector and provider.

In the moment of our opening, may we never forget that the hand that gave is the same hand that will keep, protect and grow it.
